The Model 356
taillight
doesn't use just any LEDs. Many LEDs on the market
that produce as little as 2,000 millicandela (mcd) of light are marketed as "high
intensity." Each individual red LED used on the Model 356 taillight puts out a
specified 10,000 mcd of light!

The
6-volt
Model 356 Taillight uses three separate voltage
regulators to insure that each LED illuminates at its maximum intensity
regardless of automobile system voltage variations. The 12-volt version
uses two voltage regulators.

Both the left and right taillight units employ 12
LEDs for the taillight, and 24 more LEDs for the brake light. That's
three
dozen LEDs on each side of your 356 for a full 72 High intensity LEDs spread over a pair of
taillights!

As an extra margin of safety the
6-volt
Model 356 Taillight divides the brake LEDs of each individual taillight into redundant halves,
insuring that in the unlikely event that a
brake light
voltage regulator should ever fail its effect would be contained to just 1/4 of the 48 brake LEDs. Unlike a
light bulb failure which is a total loss of light on the afflicted
side, a voltage regulator failure on
the
6-volt
Model 356 still leaves you with operating brake LED clusters on both
sides of your 356.

LED current is optimized to achieve the maximum rated light output while insuring the maximum longevity of each LED by preventing
over-voltage and over-current conditions from damaging or shortening the life of the LEDs.

Each LED of the 6-volt Model is independently biased.
This method of powering the LEDs in parallel is more costly than the alternative
which is wiring LEDs in series, but our method insures that in the unlikely
event a single LED should ever fail, that failure will not cause an entire
string of LEDs to go dark.
